[00:03.48]Situation 2:[00:04.88]A History Lecture[00:06.61](Sitting down in the back of the lecture hall.)[00:08.92]I thought for sure I'd be late.[00:11.14]Hey,Mike.You are late,but so is Professor Clark.[00:14.73]He's getting old,maybe he forgot about class today.[00:17.77]We should be so lucky.No,I'm just happy that he's later[00:21.04]than me.I was really worried.[00:22.85]Oh,here he comes.[00:24.84]Prof.Clark:(Entering from the front of the room [00:27.50]and walking up to the podium.)[00:28.56]Good morning class,or should I say good afternoon?[00:33.54]Twelve o'clock classes always confuse me.[00:36.99]In any case,let's begin today's lecture.Today I want to speak[00:41.74]about the American Civil War,which I am assuming[00:45.53]all of you read about last week in the book[00:48.10]by Huntington.The Civil War can be[00:50.83]analyzed in many ways,but today I want to[00:54.41]discuss it as a result of economics.The northern United[00:59.25]States industrialized rather earlyand so had little need[01:03.36]for slave labor in their society.The southern states,[01:08.15]on the other hand,had an economy based[01:10.59]on agriculture,particularly cotton.[01:14.51]This caused a much higher demand for[01:16.58]slavesto supply manual labor in the fields.Eventually,this funda-[01:22.07]mental difference in economic structuresled to a difference in[01:26.45]ideology.And,as ideological differences often do,[01:32.29]this led to a conflict which eventually resulted in war.[01:36.82]In this way,the Civil War is not unlike the[01:40.55]Cold War between the United Statesand the Soviet Union,[01:45.01]which was also largely caused by differing economic systems.
